This commemorative piece, Sacred Medicine, Sacred Life, is inspired by the life and work of Aj ilonel Tata Domingo Choc, a Maya Q’eqchi’ traditional healer who specialized in plant medicine and who was brutally murdered on June 6, 2020.  He dedicated his life to the preservation of medicinal plants from his territory.  He was a keeper of Indigenous ancestral knowledge and wisdom inherited from his ancestors; a wisdom that is now lost not only for his People and descendants, but for all of humanity. Sacred Medicine, Sacred Life intends to humbly preserve the spirit of Elder Tata Domingo and honor his life. For those who acquire this honoring piece, the International Mayan League in Washington, DC, will channel 100% of the sales  and donations from the art to the family / community of Tata Domingo Choc.

About Sacred Medicine, Sacred Life:
This original creation is by urban Indigenous artists, José Flores Chamalé (Guatemala/New York), and Frida Larios (El Salvador/D.C.) and features a Maya medicine man, atop a Nawat Kakaw (Cacao) tree with an interpretation of the "K'AL" hieroglyphic as arms and Kakaw tree head. The Kakaw tree connects us to a place of sacredness under its feet: the roots, where our ancestors and Tata’s ancestors behold him and his blood. At the bottom of the temple, a row of "Sempashuchit" (flower in Nawat-pipil) that are traditionally laid out for the dead, create a path to the stars. He is holding the glyph for the Maya day sign of Q’anil. Q’anil means seed, life, and creation.

The idea of the original art arises from  the Iniciativa Portadores del Náhuat - IPN (Bearers of the Nahuat Initiative-IPN), Pipil nation community, El Salvador (Kuzkatan) and their desire to express and represent their manifestation of pain and repudiation, for the living incineration of Tata Choc in his own ancestral Chimay territory in Petén, Guatemala. IPN repudiates the assassination of Tata Domingo, a Principal spiritual Elder, guardian, and wisdom keeper at the hands of religious  fundamentalists. The initiative for this commemorative art piece emerged from Jose and Frida to collaborate with IPN to present  their condolences. This action was done in collaboration with the International Mayan League, with whom José and Frida had already previously collaborated creating La Niña Verde de la Madre Tierra in honor of Jakelin Amei Rosmery Caal Maquín, Maya Q'eqchi 'nation, who died in the negligent custody of the Border Patrol.  The original water-color art will be sent out to IPN in Kuzkatan (El Salvador).
