La Niña de la Madre Tierra por Sangre Indígena y Frida Larios
$ 10.00
On January 18, 2018, in the context of the Indigenous Peoples March protest in Washington, DC, this collaborative piece by urban Indigenous artists: José Flores [Guatemaya/NY] and Frida Larios [Kuzkatan/Copan Ruinas/DC] came to life. This artwork was used as a sign by both artists as they protested in the emblematic Indigenous Peoples March and as an offering in loving memory of our stolen Mayan child Jakelin Caal (Maya Q’eqchi), and was guided by the International Mayan League traditional knowledge keeping.
José and Frida titled the art: La Niña Verde de la Madre Tierra (The Green Child of Mother Earth). "La Niña" carries Turkey's feathers as head piece. She is nesting the Earth in her hands and her ancestors at her feet, who behold her root. Her huipil is traditionally embroidered with Mam, Chuj and Q'eqchi motives, as well as with Harvesting Hands Pictoglyphs. This work was done as a donation and all proceeds helped the International Mayan League continue advocacy for justice in the death and murder of our Indigenous children. The script calligraphy in the art in blue cites the ancestral letter of our Pop Wuj:
"Que todos se levanten, que nadie se quede atrás de los demás” - Pop Wuj, Sacred Book of the Maya.
An initial 20 limited edition of this collaborative piece was co-created, co-signed and numbered on archival paper by José Flores and Frida Larios (size 12 x 18 inches), with 100% of profit going to the International Maya League in Washington, DC and their advocacy work with communities at the southern border and on the ground in Guatemaya. This is a second edition of La Niña size 17 x 22 inches with 100% of profit going towards the Mayan League's Indigenous Solidarity Fund.
The work of the International Mayan League is guided by the knowledge and teachings of our elders and ancestors to respect and care for mother earth and Mother Nature. Our work and priorities are guided by the vision and practices of our spiritual and traditional leaders, elders and authorities in order to address the root causes contributing to discrimination, inequality and oppression of the Maya and the destruction of our communities and environment. With the devastating losses of life and injustices happening to our people at the southern border there is no better time to help and support each other.
Since this ofrenda work was completed more Maya children from Guatemala have died in the hands of Border Patrol.
